Three ways to grow, and where AI does the work
Two paths we’ve been working on and a third worth adding. All three start from the same set of facts, can run side by side, and use AI for specific jobs while people make the decisions.
One starting point, three lines out
What you already have
- Selling OCTG since 1976
- An API-licensed coupling plant in Texas Couplings
- Patented premium connections from HIS
- Casing, tubing and coupling inventory
- 2-axis CNC lathes with open hours
- A Boerne office inside a HUBZone
- Real web inquiries with almost no online presence
Sell more of what you sell now
Search, AI answers and LinkedIn bring buyers to the casing, tubing, couplings and connections you already sellWin government and public orders
Sell inventory to public buyers and fill idle lathe hours with parts the government buys every weekWin private machining orders
SuggestedPoint the same bid engine at private companies that post machining jobsOne proof file of checked facts
A single, checked record of what the three companies make and can do: products, sizes and grades in stock, API licenses and their scope, HIS’s patent, the machine list and its limits, certifications and locations. The websites, the AI answers, the bid packets and the LinkedIn profiles all draw from it, so every channel says the same thing and nothing goes out that isn’t true.
- Who
- Colby builds it. Joy Pipe confirms each fact.
- AI’s part
- AI tools only use facts from this file.
In Path 1, buyers use AI to find you. In Paths 2 and 3, AI finds the buyers.
Path 1Buyers ask an AI tool for a supplier
- SharedProof filelicenses, sizes, grades, patent
- Your three websitesproduct pages, charts, datasheets
- AIChatGPT, Google, Perplexitybuild the shortlist
- A buyer or engineerasking who supplies it
- An inquiry to Joy Pipeyour team quotes it
Paths 2 and 3An AI agent reads every new posting overnight
- Bid boards and RFQ sourcesfederal, state, utility, private
- AIBid agentkeeps only the buys that fit
- SharedProof fileitem list, machine limits, origin
- AIQuote packetspecs, certs, documents
- Joy Pipea person submits every bid
What AI does
- Reads every new posting on the bid boards each night and keeps the ones that fit the item list and machine limits
- Drafts quote packets, product pages and outreach messages for a person to check
- Recommends the companies to buyers, once the websites give it facts to repeat
What people do
- Set every price
- Sign and submit every bid
- Check technical facts before anything is published
- Answer inquiries and calls, and make the parts
The three paths at a glance
| Path 1Sell more of what you sell now | Path 2Win government and public orders | Path 3Win private machining orders | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grows | Sales of casing, tubing, couplings, line pipe and premium connections | Public-sector sales of inventory, plus new CNC work for idle lathes | Private CNC work for the same idle lathes |
| Who buys | Drilling and completions engineers, operators’ buyers, distributors, buyers abroad | The Defense Logistics Agency, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve’s operating contractor, Texas well-plugging contractors, city utilities, prime contractors | Manufacturers and oilfield companies that post machining jobs |
| The evidence | 4,750 US searches a month for these products, and 0 AI citations for any of the three sites today | $389.8M in federal buys from FY2023 to FY2026 that Joy Pipe could have quoted; 58% drew three or fewer offers | Same machines and quoting engine as Path 2. Not measured yet |
| AI’s job | Get the companies named in AI answers; draft pages for review; personalize LinkedIn messages | Read about 300 federal buys a week plus state and utility postings, keep the ones that fit, draft quote packets | The same, on private requests for quotes |
| Colby runs | Site rebuild, content, AI-answer work, listings, LinkedIn automation, the paid test, monthly reporting | Registrations, the nightly bid digest, quote packets, submission tracking | Profiles, RFQ monitoring, quote packets |
| Joy Pipe provides | Product facts and spec sheets, technical review, fast replies to inquiries | Pricing, country of origin by product, sign-off, production | Machine list and limits, pricing, production |
| First results | Broken items fixed in two weeks; inquiries counted once tracking is in; rankings usually take three to nine months | First quotes in weeks 4 to 6; go or no-go at day 90 | Starts once the Path 2 engine is running |
| Measured by | Inquiries a month by source, rankings on 77 tracked searches, AI mentions on 25 buyer questions | Quotes sent, awards won, margin per order, machine hours used | Quotes sent, orders won, margin per machine hour |
Evidence from the two look-back reports: Ahrefs and Google Search Console for Path 1; USAspending.gov award records for Path 2.
All three can run at the same time
Three smaller ideas that ride on these paths
Spanish-language pages
Worldwide searches run three to four times the US figure. Search Console’s first two days already showed Joy Pipe third and sixth on Spanish searches for the best OCTG suppliers in the United States. Spanish versions of the top product pages reach buyers in Mexico and Latin America.
An online stock list
A weekly-updated page of what’s in the yard, including limited-service and surplus pipe, so “2-3/8 tubing for sale” searches land on something a buyer can act on. It could update straight from QuickBooks.
Prime contractor matching
Federal award records show which prime contractors sell pipe fittings, couplings and turned parts to the government, and primes buy from subcontractors. Colin’s Navy-parts lead is one of them. AI can run that search across every prime and flag the ones worth approaching.
Start with what every path needs
- Month 1Build the foundation and fix what’s brokenThe proof file, tracking, the expired certificate, the demo pages and the Google listings. Every path depends on this, and most of it takes weeks, not months.
- Months 1 to 3Run Path 1’s rebuild and Path 2’s pilot side by sideThey share the proof file and the capability pages, so much of the setup counts twice. Contracting officers and prime contractors check a supplier’s website too.
- Month 4Add Path 3 and LinkedIn once the first two prove outIf the pilot shows the quoting process works, point the same engine at private buyers. Start LinkedIn outreach once the new site gives people somewhere worth landing.
